Why isn't my business showing on Google Maps?

Short answer
Usually it is because the Google Business Profile isn't verified, has the wrong category or is missing details, or because the business is too far from the person searching. Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and how well known the business is. You influence the first two directly in the profile, and you build the third with reviews and a clear website.
You search for your own industry and town and find your competitors, but not yourself. It is frustrating, but it can almost always be fixed. Here are the causes we see most often, in the order you should check them.
Is the profile verified?
A Google Business Profile that isn't verified is not shown to customers. Log in to the profile and check that it doesn't say verification is required. Google verifies by video, phone, email or postcard, depending on the business. Until that is done, you don't show up.
Have you chosen the right category?
The primary category is the single most important detail for which searches you show up in. A hairdresser listed as a "beauty salon" loses searches for "hairdresser". Choose the category that describes your core business most precisely, and add a couple of additional categories for the rest.
Are your details complete and the same everywhere?
Google compares the name, address and phone number in the profile with your website and with directories such as hitta.se and Eniro. If they differ, Google becomes unsure which is right. Fill in opening hours, services and a description, and make sure the details are identical everywhere.
Are you too far from the person searching?
Distance is one of the three things Google weighs, and you can't change it. You show up best close to your address. So don't test by searching from home if you live in another part of town. If you travel out to your customers, you enter a service area instead of an address.
Do you have few or old reviews?
Reviews are the clearest sign that a business is well liked. Few reviews, or no new ones for a long time, mean that competitors with more and fresher reviews end up ahead of you. Ask your customers for a review and reply to the ones you get.
Does your website say what you do and where?
Google reads the website linked to the profile. If it says clearly which services you offer and in which town, that helps the profile match more searches. If there is no website, or it is slow and unclear, you lose out to the business that has one.
Is the profile suspended or duplicated?
If the profile breaks Google's guidelines, for example with keywords stuffed into the business name, it can be suspended. Two profiles for the same business can also cause trouble. Check whether you have had a message from Google and remove any duplicates.
