How to get more Google reviews

Short answer
Ask every customer straight after their visit, and make it easy: a link in a text message or a QR code at the till that leads straight to the review box. Many people are happy to leave a review when they are asked, but few do it unprompted. Never offer discounts or gifts for reviews, as that breaks Google's rules.
Reviews are often what decides who the customer chooses in Google Maps. They also affect how high up Google shows you. You don't need hundreds. You need more and fresher reviews than the competitor next to you.
Get your review link
Your Google Business Profile has a ready-made link that opens the review box directly. Choose "Ask for reviews" in the profile and copy the link. That is the one to share, so the customer doesn't have to go looking.
Ask at the right moment
The best time is when the customer has just said they are happy: when the haircut is done, the car is collected or the bill is paid. Say it plainly: "It would help us a lot if you wrote a couple of lines on Google."
Make it easy
The fewer the steps, the more reviews you get. Three ways that work for most businesses:
- A QR code at the till, on the receipt or on a card the customer takes with them
- A text message or email with the link the same day
- A link in your email signature and on your website
Reply to every review
Say thank you for the positive ones and reply calmly and factually to the negative ones. A good reply to a bad review shows new customers how you handle problems, and it often carries more weight than the review itself.
What you must not do
Google removes reviews and can suspend profiles that break the rules. Avoid these:
- Offering discounts, gifts or competitions in exchange for reviews
- Only asking the customers you know are happy and steering the unhappy ones away
- Writing your own reviews or letting employees do it
- Buying reviews
Make it a habit
One review a week is worth more than twenty at once followed by silence. Decide on a fixed moment to ask, for example at payment, and it keeps rolling by itself.
