Wix or a web agency: which should a small business choose?

Short answer
Build it yourself if you have more time than money and only need a simple site. Hire someone if your time is worth more in the business, or if the website is meant to bring in customers through Google. The tool matters less than the content: a Wix site with clear services, prices and a clear way to get in touch beats an expensive site without them.
Website builders such as Wix and Squarespace have made it possible to get a site up in a weekend. At the same time there are agencies that charge tens of thousands of kronor. Which is right depends on what your time is worth and what the website is meant to do for you.
When is building it yourself enough?
If you have just started out, are short of money and only need to show who you are and how to reach you, a website builder works well. Expect a monthly fee and one or two weekends to get it into shape.
What does it really cost?
A website builder costs a monthly fee for as long as the site exists, plus your own time. Do put a figure on that: twenty hours you could otherwise have charged for is often more than a finished site costs. A professionally built site costs more at the start and then a smaller fee for hosting. With us, a one-page website costs SEK 4,900 and a complete website with up to six pages costs SEK 7,900.
Where does it usually go wrong when you build it yourself?
The tools are good. What falls short is usually everything around them:
- The site never gets finished, or gets finished but isn't updated
- The text is about the business instead of what the customer gets
- What Google needs is missing: page titles, structure and a link to your Google Business Profile
- The mobile version becomes an afterthought, even though most people visit from their phone
When is it worth hiring someone?
When the website is meant to bring in customers and not just exist. Then structure, text, loading time and local SEO matter, and someone who does this every day saves you both time and missed customers. The same goes if you need booking, several languages or a customer login.
Can you start on your own and switch later?
Yes, and it is common. Just make sure you are the registered owner of the domain name yourself, so you can move the site without losing the address. Text and images can come with you to a new site.
