How does my business show up in ChatGPT?

Short answer
AI services recommend businesses they find clear and consistent information about in several places: the business's own website, its Google profile, reviews and other sites. You can't buy or guarantee a place in the answers, but you can make your business easy to find, understand and trust.
"Which car repair shop in Uppsala is good?" That question used to be put to a neighbour or to Google. Now it is also put to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers. The answer is two or three names, not ten links, so it matters whether you are one of them.
How does AI choose which businesses to mention?
An AI service has no business directory of its own. It pulls together what is on the web: websites, Google profiles, reviews, directories and articles. Businesses that are described clearly and in the same way in several places are easier to pick up and safer to recommend.
Make your website easy for a machine to read
Spell out the obvious in plain text: what you do, where you are, what it costs and when you are open. Use headings that are questions and answer them directly underneath. Add structured data, a piece of code that tells search engines and AI what the page is about.
Be the same business everywhere
Your name, address, phone number and opening hours should be identical on your website, in your Google Business Profile and in directories such as hitta.se and Eniro. Contradictions make the AI unsure, and it picks someone else.
Collect reviews
Reviews are the closest an AI gets to a recommendation from a person. Many fresh reviews on Google give the service something to lean on when it is suggesting a business.
Get mentioned on other sites
The local paper, your trade association, a business partner or a customer's website: every mention of your business name and your town strengthens the picture that you exist and are established.
Make sure the search engines find you
AI services with a search function fetch current information from search engines, not only Google but Bing as well. Check that your website is indexed in both. You can do that for free in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
