Short answer
The five most common mistakes are an unclear message on the homepage, a site that isn't mobile-friendly, a way to get in touch that is hard to find, a dated design and missing SEO basics. All five can be fixed without rebuilding everything from scratch.
Many small businesses have a website - but not all of them have one that actually helps the business. Here are five common mistakes we see, and how you can avoid them.
1. An unclear message on the homepage
Within seconds, a visitor should understand what you do, who it's for and how to get in touch. If your homepage is vague or generic, you lose potential customers straight away.
2. Not mobile-friendly
More than half of all visitors come from a mobile phone. A website that doesn't work well on mobile looks unprofessional and costs you business.
3. No clear way to get in touch
If visitors have to hunt for how to contact you, you're making it too hard. Contact details and a clear call to action should be visible on every page.
4. Dated design
A website that looks like it's from 2015 lowers trust. Design signals professionalism - and a clean, modern design doesn't have to be expensive.
5. No SEO basics
Without basic SEO - the right headings, meta descriptions and fast loading times - you miss out on organic traffic from Google. That's free traffic you're leaving on the table.
